Butterfly Box Tutorial

A good friend and a member of my local Stampin' Up Club found this great box online – she offered to share a demonstration on how to make up these boxes – SO fun to have more ideas for card holders!  Thanks Carol for all your hard work!!

Butterfly Card Box Holder

 Carol Tschida and Jan Farring

This box will easily hold 10+ cards and envelopes

I used the Gold Soiree Designer Series Paper and a few months back I made a set of cards using the One Sheet Wonder Technique – these would fit beautifully in this box!!

The neat thing about this box, is that you can make it any size and any thickness.  This one measures 5 ½” x 5 ½” and is 2 ½” wide.  You can make it smaller or larger just by changing the measurements.    Just be sure and add ½” in to the side measurements for the ¼” that needs to be folded in!

Supplies

1 – 12” x 12” sheet Pistachio Pudding card stock

Vellum Card Stock (101856)

Gold Soiree Specialty Designer Paper (133697)

Sticky Strip Tape (104294)

Tombow Multipurpose Glue (110755)

Butterfly Thinlits Dies (137360 – at the moment on the “backordered – do not order” list, but will be available soon)

Stampin’ Trimmer (126889)

Simply Scored Scoring Tool (122334)

Bone Folder (102300)

Instructions

  1.  Cut two squares 5 ½” x 5 ½” from the Pistachio Pudding card stock.  Cut each of these squares diagonally in half.  These will make the top and bottom of your box

  Butterfly Box 1

 2.  For the sides of the box, cut 2 strips from the remaining Pistachio Pudding 3” x 12”.  Score these strips in the middle at 6” and ¼” on each side along the 12” side.  Also score each 3” end at ½”

Score at 6”                                                       Score each side at ¼”

3.   Cut the small corners on all 4 ends away – between the score lines.  Burnish all the score lines well with your bone folder

 4.    Add Sticky Strip tape to the ¼” score lines

 5.    Cut out the butterflies on the top two triangle pieces.  TIP:  The “sandwich” for cutting out your butterflies is bottom to top

This sandwich makes is SO easy to pop out the “confetti” in this intricate die!

 6.   Cut a piece of Vellum Card Stock 5 ¼” x 5 ¼” and cut in two triangles.  Glue the Vellum to back of the triangle butterfly pieces.   Add a thin bead of Tombow Multipurpose Glue around the outside of the Vellum and insert the cut butterfly – hold in place a few seconds for a good seal

 7.  Next step is to add the triangles for the bottom of the box.  Remove the “red tape” and bring the two sides together to form a 90 degree angle.  Add the triangle to this piece

You will need to trim off the little “triangle” pieces on each end (see above photo)

  Butterfly Box 11

Do the above for both sides

 8.   Next step is to attach the two sides together.  Add Stickly Strip to the ½” strip on each end and attach one side to the other inside the box

  Butterfly Box 12

I cut a strip 3” x 2  ½” and scored it in the center.  I added sticky strip to each side and added it to the “hinge” part to give is strength

 9.   The next step is to add your butterflies triangles to the top the same way you added the plain triangles to the bottom (or back) of the box

10.    Fold in the ½” scored area and punch a hole in the center of those pieces.  Add some ribbon to close your box

Decorate the panels.  I added some pearls to the butterflies and a panel of the printed designer series paper behind the butterflies!

The Butterfly Thinlits Dies introduced in the 2015 Occasions Catalog have been backordered and were put on the "not able to order" list because of the back order problems.  There is a dockworkers strike in California and lot of the products are held up on the docks!  The most recent backorder update says the Butterfly Thinlits Dies (137360) will be available for ordering soon!  And they might already be available.
